How to get licensed to ride a motorcycle in New York

Assuming you have a driver’s license and no motorcycle experience, there are two paths to get an β€œM” endorsement in the state of New York πŸ‘‡πŸ½

The easy way

  1. Take your motorcycle permit test at the DMV.

  2. Take a class with Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

  3. Pass the written and skills test in class, get a license waiver.

  4. Skip the road test at the DMV. Trade in your license waiver for a motorcycle endorsement.

The hard way

  1. Take your motorcycle permit test at the DMV.

  2. Buy a motorcycle or find one to practice on.

  3. Learn how to ride.

  4. Take the road test with the DMV.

What you need to know about class

Classes are offered in many locations. Kingsboro Community College in Brooklyn is home to Motorcycle Safety School. Classes can fill up fast for the upcoming riding season. Register early before they are sold out. Most insurance companies often give a small discount to riders who have taken a safety/training class. You might even make a a few friends along the way. These folks may be your first riding group since you all are probably at a similar skill level. Either way, it’s a great time and you will learn the basics of motorcycle operation.
